An ISIN (International Securities Identification Number) is a unique twelve-character identifier assigned to each financial security, allowing it to be identified unambiguously across all international settlement, custody and reporting channels.
Assigning an ISIN is the responsibility of a national numbering agency recognised by the Association of National Numbering Agencies (ANNA). For a security issued in Luxembourg, assignment goes through the competent Luxembourg numbering agency.
An ISIN request requires the legal documentation of the security to be final: the identity of the issuer and the characteristics of the security must be settled before the code can be issued.
Once the request is filed, assignment of an ISIN generally takes a few business days. It is this step that then makes it possible to open the security with the central depositories.
Each Comparto receives its own ISIN, distinct from that of any other cell on the same platform — which is what allows every transaction to appear as a bankable, individually identifiable line on the investor's portfolio statement.
